Reaching for the Stars: SJIC’s STEM Fusion Classes do a Rocket Experiment

In the vast realm of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), hands-on experiments and projects are at the heart of learning. These exciting endeavors not only provide students with practical knowledge, but also ignite a passion for discovery. This is exactly what happens in South Jersey Innovation Center’s (SJIC) STEM Fusion classes.

Most recently, the STEM Fusion Class performed a rocket experiment, under the guidance of instructor Diamonik Hough. The experiment involved reacting sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, and water together in order to create pressure inside of the rocket and cause it to shoot off into the sky. The STEM Fusion students and a number of parents watched in awe as the rocket ascended into the air rapidly.

The experiment did not end there, though. The classes reconvened the next week to do it again, but this time with a slight deviation–they replaced the water with lemon juice. This catalyzed the reaction. Once again, the students and parents watched in amazement.

Overall, the experiment was a ton of fun, and a definite success. Hough hopes to continue doing more like it for his classes. Blast off!

A leading center for STEM instruction (including chess, math, and 3D printing), SJIC offers a variety of innovative STEM programs for kids looking for fun and growth.
