SJIC is sending a contingent of 27 chess students to the National K-12 Grade Championships being held just outside Washington DC from Dec. 9-11, 2022 (you can read more about the Nationals here: https://incntr.com/chess/sjic-is-going-to-the-nationals/). This is the second of a series of profiles highlighting four SJIC participants.

  • Favorite opening for white: Ponziani 
  • How she got into chess: Through a board game called No Stress Chess at age seven
  • Best past result: This summer, Shyla tied for 1st place in the World Open Under 13 Championship (PA) in under 1400 section
  • Goals for this year’s Nationals: She hopes to win at least half of her games, and is excited to play alongside Team Innovators (SJIC’s chess team)
  • Random facts: Shyla has a goldendoodle and four year old sister
