Chess: Class Catalog

BEGINNER LESSON A/B

The objective of the class is to introduce kids to the game of chess and to prepare them to play competitively. The class introduces the rules of the game, the board and the pieces as well as basic decision making skills around strategy and tactics. The course focuses on understanding important chess patterns which are used as a foundation for further progress. The first part (~30 minutes) is a lesson on theoretical while the second part is devoted to organized play and chess puzzles with master guidance. We may offer two time slots for Beginner in which case you may register for either Lesson A or B.

ADVANCED BEGINNER LESSON A/B

The objective of the class is to introduce kids to the game of chess and to prepare them to play competitively in scholastics tournaments. The class introduces basic rules and plays as well as decision making skills such as strategy and tactics. The course focuses on understanding important chess patterns which are used as foundation for further progress. The first part (~30 minutes) is a lesson on theoretical concepts as well as practical play. The second part is actual training play and chess puzzles with master analysis.

Prerequisite:

Rating of 100-400 or Beginner Lesson A/B

INTERMEDIATE LESSON A/B/C

The objective of the Class is to prepare our players to apply a methodical decision-making process and advanced practical concepts in tournament play. The class will be 60 minutes of lesson, followed by 30 minutes of practice time immediately following. The first part of the lesson is spent on theoretical concepts and practical play. The second part is devoted to practice, rated games, and training exercises with analysis from the master. Practice time with peers will follow.

Prerequisite:

Rating of 400-1,000 or Beginner / Advanced Beginner Lesson

ADVANCED LESSON

The objective of the advanced chess class is to develop strategic planning and positional play in order to enable players to play competitively against higher rated tournament players. The class focuses on applying important chess and objective decision-making approach which allows the player to optimize tactical skills and strategic play. The class is 60 minutes of lessons, followed by 30 minutes of practice. The first part is a lesson on theoretical concepts as well as practical play. The second part is devoted to training exercises with analysis from the master. Practice time will be for 30 minutes directly following the 60 minute class.
